Exploding exhaust?

went down the paper shop on sunday morning in a renault laguna,popped in , got papers,got back in car ,the engine wouldnt fire,i tried the ignition 3 or 4 times when there was a mive bang,the back box on the exhaust had blown apart.the exhaust is only 6 months old .why would this happen?
