My new laptop won't pick up the router broadcast but my old one does?

I got a new HP Pavilion dv6 quad edition about a week ago for graduation and for some odd reason it won't connect to the router. I can't compain because it isn't even mine. Its my nieghbors. But my old laptop picked it up fine. But my new one doesn't. Sometimes it doesn't even pick it up and when it does it will normally not even connect. It will say it failed. Then the couple times I did get it to connect it just all the sudden disconnected and my laptop recognized it as an "unidentified network" and it said local only. Any pointer? Its a cisco router. Oh and I'm on here through my cell but I'm tiered so yeah that won't work. Thanks
